After many years of waiting, Yamaha has released its first High-Performance Sport UTV. The YXZ1000R, which has been described as the only “Pure Sport” Side by Side, uses a new 998cc inline triple engine mated to a 5-speed sequential shift gearbox and matched with a collection of Yamaha’s proven features.

The heart of Yamaha's YXZ1000R is a 998cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline three-cylinder powerplant featuring a compact DOHC twelve-valve cylinder head, an aggressive 11.3:1 compression ratio and high-tech dry-sump lubrication. Unlike anything we've tested, the YXZ's fierce roar is intimidating and it's high rev powerband sent us back to days of the Banshee. It's most comfortable when screaming to be shifted. Yes, shifted. The YXZ1000R's 5-speed sequential shift gearbox is the first of its kind in the industry, and will be considered the new standard for high-performance UTVs.

With the twist of a dial, Yamaha's On-Command 4WD gives the YXZ1000R ultimate traction, with easily selected 2WD and 4WD full diff lock modes. It's fun to slide around and square up dunes in 2WD, but the YFZ1000R handles best in four-wheel drive and Yamaha's Electronic Power Steering (EPS) has the perfect amount of feedback through the steering wheel.

Yamaha's unique-looking front end rides on an Independent double-wishbone suspension, with fully-adjustable FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Shocks, that offer up to 16.2-inches of front wheel travel. A similar Independent double-wishbone rear suspension offers 17-inches of wheel travel and utilizes the same FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Shocks. Yamaha equipped an anti-sway bar on both the front and rear of the YXZ1000R. The suspension is rigid, but incredibly stable. Even in the long, inconsistent whoop sections, the YXZ remained straight as an arrow. The stock settings are a bit harsh, but they're forgiving to both trail obstacles and driver error. You will not need to by aftermarket shocks for the YXZ1000R. The stock shocks are fully adjustable, including adjustments for high and low-speed compression, rebound, and preload. You can soften the compression for a more comfortable ride, or stiffen the compression when you want to hammer it. Speaking of hammering it, we have yet to hear about a YXZ breaking down. Have you?
